Diwali, also known as thefestival of lights, is one of the most popular festivals in India. It is celebrated by Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the country and is a five-day long festival. Diwali marks the victory of good over evil and is celebrated by lighting diyas (lamps) and candles, setting off fireworks and exchanging gifts. The festival is also a time for families and friends to get together and enjoy feasts and celebrations. Diwali is an important festival in the Hindu calendar and is celebrated at the end of the Hindu lunar month of Ashvin (October-November). The festival is celebrated to mark the return of Lord Rama from his 14-year exile and his victory over the demon king Ravana. Diwali is also a significant festival for Sikhs as it marks the release of their sixth guru, Guru Hargobind, from imprisonment by the Mughal emperor Jahangir. For Jains, Diwali commemorates the nirvana (liberation from the cycle of birth and death) of their 24th and last tirthankara, Mahavira. Diwali is a five-day festival and each day has its own significance. The first day is Dhanteras, which is celebrated as the day when Lord Dhanvantari, the god of Ayurveda, emerged from the ocean of milk with the elixir of life. The second day is Naraka Chaturdasi, which marks the victory of Lord Krishna over the demon king Narakasura. The third day is the main Diwali day, when people light diyas and candles, exchange gifts and enjoy feasts and fireworks. The fourth day is Govardhan Puja, when people worship Govardhan, the hill on which Lord Krishna is said to have defeated Indra, the god of rain. The fifth and final day is Bhai Dooj, when brothers visit their sisters homes and exchange gifts. Diwali is a joyous festival that is celebrated by people of all ages and shared diwali shayari by them. It is a time to come together and celebrate the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance.
